Why choose the British script?
In 2012, the British poet and playwright James Fenton adapted “Orphans of Zhao” for the Royal Shakespeare Company, which was staged at the Swan Theatre in Stratford, Shakespeare’s hometown. “The Orphan of Zhao” is known as the Chinese version of “Hamlet”. The most difficult plot in the arrangement of this play is that Cheng Ying decided to sacrifice his own child to die instead of the orphan of Zhao in order to save the orphan of Zhao. James Fenton added a high-five plot to the end of the play: Cheng Ying came back to dig up his son’s grave many years later, and his son’s soul slowly floated out of the grave, asking him why he gave up on himself.
“Our country can say that this work has been evolving for more than 700 years. Everyone knows that there are movies and dramas, as well as TV dramas, dance dramas, operas, Peking opera, Cantonese opera and other forms.” Among so many interpretations, director Xu Jun has chosen to choose. Based on the British James Fenton’s script, he believes that Fenton’s script fully interprets the two most important questions about the “Orphan of Zhao” from a contemporary perspective: How can parents and children die, and how can adoptive fathers be killed.
