Mysterious Japanese Brand KHOKI Reveals Designer’s Identity for LVMH Prize Semi-finals
Among the brands shortlisted for the 2024 LVMH Prize semi-finals, only one has kept the true identity of the designer a mystery. KHOKI, a fashion brand hailing from Japan, has maintained a sense of anonymity since its establishment in 2019. However, founder Koki Abe recently disclosed his personal name for the first time, citing the requirements of the competition as the reason for the reveal.
Koki Abe, the founder and director of KHOKI, shared with Hypebeast the brand’s unique approach to design. KHOKI combines modern designs with traditional textile techniques, drawing inspiration from various cultural sources such as Suzani embroidery from Central Asia and Khanta embroidery from Bangladesh and India. The brand aims to create a “New Casual” design style that blends different national cultures.
In an interview with Hypebeast, Koki Abe revealed some of his daily essentials, including a sewing set, Bialetti Espresso Maker, COMME des GARÇONS wallet, Cartier Must Tank 1970s watch, and a KHOKI card case. He also discussed the origin of KHOKI, the team composition, and the brand’s signature pattern design.
Despite his secretive approach to the brand’s identity, Koki Abe expressed his commitment to creating products that satisfy consumers and hinted at upcoming collaborations for KHOKI. When asked about his alternative career choice, Abe joked that he would have been a cartoonist if he weren’t a fashion designer.
