Xuanwumen”: A Journey of Traditional Culture and Historical Inheritance

The TV series “Xuanwumen”, which presents the inheritance of traditional culture in modern times, has officially launched. Directed by Wang Xiaokang, the star-studded cast includes Ren Zhong, Tong Lei, Zhang Fengyi, Siqin Gaowa, and more. The series, which began airing on Beijing Satellite TV, iQiyi, and Tencent Video on March 5th, is based on the Xuanwu Gate and follows the story of the jade carving family Li Tianshun as they safeguard a precious national treasure.

Covering the period from 1898 to 1945, “Xuanwumen” delves into historical events such as the Reform Movement of 1898, the Eight-Power Allied Forces’ invasion of China, and the Anti-Japanese War. Director Wang Xiaokang noted that the focus of the series is on an ordinary family in Beijing, highlighting the changes in Chinese history through the lens of one family’s fate and the preservation of traditional Chinese culture amidst tumultuous times.

The series follows jade carving artist Li Yunmian (played by Zhang Fengyi) as he creates a unique jade pomegranate that symbolizes China’s national destiny. With themes of perseverance, resilience, and patriotism, the story unfolds as the family navigates challenges, tragedies, and triumphs in their quest to protect the precious national treasure.

“Xuanwumen” marks Wang Xiaokang’s first foray into directing historical dramas, following his success with modern dramas. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in the reconstruction of a 1:1 Xuanwumen Old Street set and the elaborate costumes that bring the historical setting to life on screen.

Through vivid portrayals of Beijing’s cultural heritage and historical events, “Xuanwumen” aims to capture the essence of the Xuanwu Gate period and offer viewers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Chinese history. As Wang Xiaokang emphasized, the series strives to present a faithful depiction of history and showcase the enduring spirit of the Chinese people throughout the ages.
