Afghanistan, from the former school of Chiaravalle to the gym in via Aldini: the reception network for refugees is organized in Milan

by admin

From the former school of Chiaravalle to the gym in via Aldini which, like the structure in viale Fulvio Testi, which in the past was also transformed into a Covid hotel for the homeless, has already been used during the cold floor to guarantee shelter during the winter in who does not have a home. These are the first addresses of a map of reception for Afghan refugees that the Municipality is evaluating: it is among these that, if the numbers do not grow, at least one additional space will be identified for the centers managed by the associations for the prefecture, which in case of need could be made available for the first emergency phase.

But for the families who manage to escape from Kabul, the administration is convinced, it is necessary to think immediately afterwards as well. And it is on this double dimension, of the concrete and immediate help to be offered to those who arrive with nothing but the clothes they are wearing and the life to be built later, that Palazzo Marino is working on. From the “constant confrontation with the prefecture, waiting for the management of future flows that may affect the city to be clarified by the national coordination”, explains Anna Scavuzzo. At the meeting that the deputy mayor and the councilor for Social Policies Gabriele Rabaiotti had with the realities of the Third Sector involved in various capacities in the emergency. Objective: to coordinate efforts and not to disperse the offers of support that are coming.

Afghanistan, hospitality in structures and fundraising: the chain of solidarity for refugees is organized in Milan

by Alessia Gallione

It is a complex machine, that of solidarity that has been set in motion for the women and families who will have to flee Afghanistan. And not only for the unknowns about how many refugees will be able to arrive and when, but for the future support that will be guaranteed to people who will have to start over in the city and who will have to deal with documents, will have to learn the language, find work, enroll children at school. It is also for this reason that Palazzo Marino wanted to bring together associations working between Afghanistan and the territory around a table, to understand current and subsequent needs and, in fact, coordinate activities: Emergency, Umberto Veronesi Foundation, which managed to bring to Milan the first female doctors together with their families, Caritas, which in addition to taking care of basic necessities is looking for spaces and can activate the network of parishes, the Community of Sant’Egidio which also deals with teaching Italian. But the city, once again, is responding spontaneously to the need. From those who contacted Caritas, who opened a fundraiser precisely because of the many offers of support that were arriving, to the Milanese who are writing in the emails of the mayor and councilors up to Women for women, the group of professionals who activated a civic network. Another task for which Palazzo Marino will be the director. Because, confirms Scavuzzo, “we must evaluate how to channel the many availabilities that are arriving in these days from individuals, families and associations into an orderly and effective system”. In the emergency, but above all for the future.
