The pill has just turned 50, but in Italy it has never been a great success. Only 14% of women of childbearing age use it, compared to 22% of the European average. This is due to a lack of knowledge of contraception and its benefits and the persistence of a negative perception that magnifies minimal risks and surmountable side effects.
