Born without eyes, from Senegal to Italy for surgery – Medicine

(ANSA) – ROME, JULY 10 – Born without eyes due to a rare malformation, Mouhamed is about to turn one. Thanks to a network of solidarity, he arrived in Italy, where he underwent surgery to receive eye prostheses that will grow with him and will allow him to have a face like other children.

Mouhamed’s life begins in Senegal in July 2022, with a rare malformation, but in his country no one has the means to help him. He suffers from anophthalmia, a congenital pathology that determines the lack of formation of the optic vesicles during life in the uterus. A few days later, however, the life of the little one takes a different turn. On July 29, the father, who lives in Milan for work, writes an email to the director of the Rare Disease Observatory, Ilaria Ciancaleoni Bartoli. A mechanism is set in motion thanks to which the baby arrives with his mother from Senegal to Rome, a guest of the Kim Association.

“The lack of eyeballs – explains Alessandra Modugno, director of Ocularistica Italiana, a center specialized in the production of eye prostheses for children suffering from malformations – can only be compensated for by prostheses.

So Mouhamed was given prostheses of increasing size to gradually expand the cavity where there is no eye. He will never recover his sight, but these devices have achieved a very high aesthetic quality and make it possible to give expressiveness to the gaze”.

“Anophthalmia”, explains Andrea Bartuli, head of the rare disease clinic at the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital – like most rare diseases, are conditions that require close collaboration between specialists”. (ANSA).
