A new research ofUniversity of Oklahoma reveals a previously unknown chain of events that triggers the development of cancer cachexia, a debilitating condition of muscle wasting that almost always occurs in people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The researchers found that communication between pancreatic cancer cells and macrophages leads to the onset of cachexia. Macrophages, usually responsible for defense against infections, are recruited by tumor cells to cause damage. This interaction leads to increased secretion of a protein called TWEAKwhich is involved in the development of cachexia by binding to muscle cells and causing inflammation.

Lo studio demonstrated that communication between tumor cells and macrophages underlies cachexia, offering a therapeutic window to intervene and potentially halt or reduce cachexia. This could improve the prognosis for patients with pancreatic cancer, which currently has a low five-year survival rate.
