Covid, all indicators are decreasing from cases to hospitalizations – Healthcare

Hospitalizations in the medical area and in intensive care, Rt transmissibility index, incidence of diagnosed and reported cases: the indicators relating to Covid are all decreasing according to the weekly monitoring of the Ministry of Health and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) updated to 10 January . In particular, the occupancy of beds in the medical area was 8.2% (5,131 hospitalized), a decrease compared to the previous week (10.1% on 3 January). The occupancy of intensive care beds also decreased, equal to 2.4% (213 hospitalized), compared to the previous week (2.8%). The Rt transmissibility index, based on cases with hospitalization, is below the epidemic threshold, equal to 0.75, a decrease compared to the previous week (0.82). Furthermore, these values, we read in the monitoring, could be underestimated due to a delay in notification of hospitalizations during public holidays.

As for the incidence of diagnosed and reported Covid cases, in the period 4-10 January it amounted to 36 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a decrease compared to the previous week (66 cases).

This decline, note the Ministry of Health and the ISS, could, in part, be attributable to a reduced frequency of diagnoses carried out during holidays. The weekly incidence also decreased in most of the Regions/Autonomous Provinces. The highest incidence was reported in Lazio (61 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and the lowest in Sicily (5 cases) and is decreasing in all age groups. The median age at diagnosis is 60 years, a slight increase compared to previous weeks.

The most fragile age group is that of the elderly: hospitalization and mortality rates in fact have the highest values in the over 90s, who are also those with the highest weekly incidence rate.

Finally, the variants chapter: based on the sequencing data available in the national I-Co-Gen platform, JN.1 currently represents the predominant variant, with a proportion equal to 49.2% in the last consolidated sampling week (18-24 December 2024). Furthermore, the co-circulation of viral strains attributable to XBB, and in particular EG.5 (27.3%), is confirmed, albeit with decreasing values.
