For the fourth week in a row, Covid hospitalizations in Italian hospitals are decreasing. This is what was made known by the survey of the sentinel network of the Fiaso, regarding the first seven days of 2024. The drop was precisely 22 percent with regards to hospitalized patients. Fiaso also reports a drop in hospitalized patients “with covid” of 27 percent, with reference to those who arrived in hospital with other causes and then tested positive for coronavirus, a clear indication of how viral circulation is in sharp decline. As regards hospitalizations “due to Covid”, the decrease was 10 percent.
The average age of the patients instead it was 77 years old, and in most cases these were people with other pathologies that further aggravated the clinical picture. FIASO’S POINT ON COVID HOSPITALIZATIONS AND SEVERE PNEUMONIA
John Migliore, president of Fiaso, commented on the latest data by saying that: “The decline in Covid hospitalizations is now confirmed, but the pressure on hospitals shows no sign of decreasing due to the flu”.
“We are – he continued – unfortunately seeing severe pneumonia not due to Covid infection but also to the consequences of the flu in intensive care. We must still be cautious because in the coming weeks we will also see the effects of the reopening of schools on hospitals.” According to experts, the peak of the flu should occur at the end of the month.
