Covid outbreak at San Giovanni di Dio in Crotone, the doctors’ SOS: “Critical situation”

A Covid-19 outbreak would have emerged among some departments of the“San Giovanni di Dio” hospital in Crotonedove at least eighteen cases have been registered in the last three days, involving in particular the Geriatrics ward, but also those of Medicine, Nephrology and Emergency Medicine. The high number of hospitalizations in the ward for Covid patients is also part of this mechanism, while medical personnel are decimated from contagions and isolation due to contacts with positives.

The situation of great difficulty was highlighted by some doctors of the hospital who requested the intervention of the company management to carry out the tracing through molecular swabs. A hypothesis that, however, at the moment, according to reports, has not yet been implemented. Particularly criticizes the situation in Geriatricslocated on the fourth floor of the hospital in insufficient rooms.

Patients, according to the health staff, are always over the possible number, with small rooms that can accommodate up to six beds but with spaces for four patients. Added to this are dilapidated bathrooms, little space for health personnel and the total absence of bathrooms dedicated to staff, forced to use the facilities located on the sixth floor. “Conditions – highlights the staff who work in the hospital – which constitute a particularly favorable terrain, especially if this is not an obstacle by blocking the admissions and tracing the staff”. Furthermore, there is no codification of a plan that contains the company guidelines for the management of similar cases, so everything remains to be determined by the individual doctor on duty.

In the meantime, the ASP commissioner specified that “the situation is under control and that the positivity of the medical and health personnel, which did not occur at the same time, did not cause any interruption of the activity in the hospital wards. All suitable measures were immediately adopted as the cases were detected “.
