The impact of Covid continues to decline in Italy. The incidence of cases decreases from 16 from 36 per 100 thousand inhabitants, and the transmissibility index from 0.65 from 0.75 as well as the occupancy of hospital beds. And JN.1 remains dominant with 62.7% of cases. This is indicated by the weekly ISS-Ministry of Health monitoring. As of 01/17/2024, the occupancy of beds in the medical area was 6.0% (3,723 hospitalized), a decrease compared to the previous week (8.2% as of 01/10/2024). The occupancy of intensive care beds also decreased, equal to 1.9% (167 hospitalized), compared to the previous week (2.4% as of 10/01/2024).
The transmissibility index (Rt) based on cases with hospitalization as of 01/09/2024 is below the epidemic threshold, equal to 0.65 (0.62-0.69), decreasing compared to the previous week when it was 0 ,75.
The incidence of COVID-19 cases diagnosed and reported in the period 01/11/2024 – 01/17/2024 is equal to 16 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a decrease compared to the previous week (36 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the week 04/01 /2024 – 10/01/2024).
The weekly incidence is decreasing in all Regions/PPAA compared to the previous week. The highest incidence was reported in the Lazio Region (28 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and the lowest in Sicily (3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).
The age group that records the highest weekly incidence rate is the 90+ age group. The weekly incidence decreased in all age groups.
The percentage of reinfections is approximately 42%, a slight decrease compared to the previous week. Finally, based on the sequencing data available in the national I-Co-Gen platform as of January 15, JN.1 (descendant of BA.2.86) currently represents the predominant variant, with a proportion equal to 62.7% in the last week of sampling consolidated (25-31 December 2023).

“The decrease in the contagion from Sars-CoV-2 is further consolidated. The commitment of the entire system and the attention that citizens have placed and are placing in tackling it with the tools that we have learned to know and, therefore, to use, have determined this result. “The Ministry and related institutes continue their work of monitoring all respiratory pathologies typical of the season”, states the general director of health prevention of the Ministry of Health, Francesco Vaia in the accompanying note to the weekly bulletin of the Ministry of Health – ISS.

The bulletin specifies that in the week 11-17 January 2024, 9,675 new positive cases were recorded with a variation of -53.8% compared to the previous week (n: 20,945) and 258 deaths with a variation of -27.3% compared to the previous week (n: 355). 180,932 swabs were performed, a decrease of 20.1% and the positivity rate was 5.3% (-3.9% compared to the previous week when it was 9.2%). Employment in the medical area as of January 17th was 6% (3,723 hospitalized), compared to 8.2% (5,131 hospitalized) on January 10th. The occupancy rate in intensive care is 1.9% (167 hospitalized), compared to 2.4% (213 hospitalized) on January 10th.
