Cybersecurity, quantum communication tests at the G20 in Trieste

by admin

The notes of three quartets from Ljubljana, Zagreb and Trieste greeted the first international quantum communication experiment with an “anti-hacker video call”, between three states, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, on the occasion of the G20 dedicated to the digital issue.

In the days when Italy is experiencing first-hand all the risks associated with piracy, the Trieste event provided the opportunity for a first public demonstration of the protection potential of quantum technology.

The video call, which developed on optical fibers that connect the three nodes of Ljubljana, Rijeka and Trieste for a distance between 80 and 10 kilometers, in fact used an innovative quantum encryption system. During the communication, after the greetings of the institutional representatives, three musical quartets performed a piece in each of the three countries.

The connection took place in the presence of the Minister for Economic Development Giancarlo Giorgetti, the Minister for Technological Innovation and Digital Transition Vittorio Colao and the foreign delegations present at the G20.

Quantum communication responds to the need for security in communications, a priority for all governments in the world. This technology allows levels of security unattainable with current encryption protocols thanks to the particular operation of quantum cryptographic “keys”.
