People who have a sleep more disturbed between the ages of 30 and 40 may be more likely to suffer from memory problems and reasoning a decade later. The study involved 526 people with an average age of 40 years, followed for 11 years. The researchers looked at the duration and quality of the participants’ sleep. The latter wore an activity monitor on their wrist for three consecutive days on two occasions approximately one year apart. Participants slept an average of six hours. They also completed a sleep quality questionnaire with scores ranging from zero to 21, (higher scores indicate worse sleep quality). A total of 239 people, or 46%, reported poor sleep with a score above five. The participants also took a series of memory and thinking tests. So, people with the most disturbed sleep were more than twice as likely to have poor cognitive performance than those with the least disturbed sleep.
