Examining the Regional Disparities in Attacks on Doctors: Which Areas Are Most Affected in Spain?

Doctors in Spain face varying levels of attacks depending on the region they practice in, according to data from the Collegiate Medical Organization’s National Observatory of Attacks on Doctors. In 2023, a total of 769 attacks were reported across the country, with Catalonia topping the list with an average of 5.92 attacks per 1,000 members. Cantabria and Extremadura also reported high numbers of attacks.

On the other hand, regions like Galicia, Basque Country, Navarra, and the Canary Islands had fewer reported attacks in 2023. In total, the Observatory has recorded 7,261 attacks since 2011, with Primary Care being the most affected area.

The majority of attackers are scheduled patients, followed by unscheduled patients and companions. The average profile of the aggressor is a male between 40-60 years old, although women under 40 also show a notable presence.

With this data in mind, the importance of addressing and preventing attacks on healthcare workers remains a critical issue. The Observatory’s updated guide on how to handle such situations will serve as a valuable resource for medical professionals facing these challenges.
