“False” Sicilian blood oranges and San Cono prickly pears: complaints and fines

by admin

Baylon is called the operation that led to the seizure of products passed off as DOP and IGP for a value of 80 thousand euros, from Parmigiano Reggiano to Buffalo Mozzarella, from Red Orange of Sicily to Prickly Pear of San Cono, but also on organic brands and food traceability. This is the balance sheet of the activities carried out throughout Italy by Rac, the Agri-food protection departments in numerous companies in the agri-food sector.

In detail, the operations concerned the lack of traceability on 1,297.5 kg of rice, 3,250 kg of soft wheat, 360 kg of chickpeas, 93 kg of fish products and 60 kg of cured pork for the production of sausages. As for the controls of the dairy sector, 64 thousand envelopes and wrappers were seized for packaging unduly bearing writings and logos referring to organic production, as they lacked certification for processing. The owner of the dairy was then denounced for non-compliance with the provisions from which 1,664 kg of processed dairy products were seized for a value of 10 thousand euros. Overall, the RAC reports, penalties for a total amount of over 15 thousand euros have been contested.
