Fire of Sant’Antonio: free vaccination begins in the province of Oristano

Oristano

Two doses to be made. Useful information for administration

The anti-Herpes Zoster vaccination campaign has started, offered free of charge by the Hygiene and Public Health Service of the Local Health Authority n. 5 of Oristano throughout the provincial territory.

The campaign is aimed at all people aged 50 and over – the age group most affected by the virus – and frail people aged 18 and over, who will be able to book a vaccination appointment at the public health clinic of reference between those present in the province (offices and opening hours can be consulted on the website www.asloristano.it> Public hygiene offices)

In Oristano it will be possible to undergo the vaccine even without a reservation, by going to the Public Hygiene Service (via Carducci 35) on Tuesdays or Thursdays, from 9 to 13 or from 15 to 18. -Covid will be able to carry out the two vaccines, anti-herpes and anti-Covid on the same occasion, considering that their concomitant administration has no contraindications.

Also involved in the vaccination campaign are the nursing homes and the Rsa of the area, whose guests, upon request of the structures and with the consent of family members, can be vaccinated on the spot by the operators of the Hygiene and Public Health Service.

Herpes Zoster, also known as “shingles”, is a frequent and debilitating disease, due to the reactivation of the chickenpox virus, which remains latent in the nervous system. The resulting infection causes a painful rash, with blisters appearing on the body accompanied by burning and itching. After the acute phase of the disease, complications can occur such as post herpetic neuralgia, which causes severe and lasting pain and responds poorly to available therapies.

It is mainly the elderly who are affected by Herpes Zoster: two thirds of cases occur in people over the age of 50, an important fact in light of the increase in life expectancy: in an aging world, it is estimated that about one person out of three, among the over 50s, will contract the disease, the development of which is also linked to other pathologies and stress.

The vaccine is administered in two doses with an interval of 2-6 months and reduces the risk of developing Herpes Zoster, but above all it protects against post herpetic neuralgia: its effectiveness is greater than 90 percent in subjects aged 50 and over. and between 70 and 90 percent in frail 18-year-olds. Vaccination can take place concurrently with influenza, pneumococcal, tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis and anti-Covid vaccination. Instead, it should be postponed if you have a severe infection with fever.
