First pediatric intraosseous access to Crotone spoke hospital – Medicine

For the first time in a spoke hospital in Calabria, a pediatric intraosseous access is carried out to save the life of a little girl. The ASP of Crotone made this known with a press note which revealed the activation of a particular procedure which was necessary to rescue and stabilize an 8-year-old girl who arrived in the pediatric department of the San Giovanni di Dio hospital in Crotone in serious condition due, explains the ASP note, “to severe hypovolemic shock due to diabetic ketoacidosis (Dka), characterized by Kussmaul breathing and altered state of consciousness”. The little girl could no longer breathe and was completely dehydrated. Conditions that did not allow venous access to implement traditional stabilization protocols.

“The pediatric team – explains the Asp – promptly applied the international protocols for the management of critically ill patients, an approach which involves in the first instance the stabilization of the patient with the administration of O2, maintenance of airway patency and positioning of venous accesses The difficulty in finding a traditional venous access due to the severe state of shock was brilliantly overcome by positioning an intraosseous access thanks to the use of an electric drill. As is known, compared to traditional venous accesses, the intraosseous route has the advantage of exploiting a dense vascular network that does not collaborate even in seriously compromised patients”.

The patient, successfully stabilized, is currently managed and monitored in the pediatric department and is receiving all the necessary subintensive care. “His conditions are stable and his life is no longer in danger” writes the Asp of Crotone who underlines: “This case highlights the vital importance of continuous training and preparation of healthcare personnel. It is a notable achievement for our hospital, as it is the first time that an operation of this type has been performed in a Calabrian spoke hospital”.
