COSENZA – A forty-two-year-old patient underwent a heart transplant at Ismett. The man was initially admitted to the Annunziata hospital due to acute heart failure. After that, he was transferred to the Reanimation of the University Polyclinic of Catanzaro.
The collaboration between the two companies allowed the patient to be transferred to Catanzaro in order to be subjected to an extra bodily circulation, to prevent his heart from stopping completely. At the Polyclinic of Catanzaro, due to the critical situation, the patient was subjected to Ecmo by the resuscitators: Federico Longhini, Eugenio Garofalo, Andrea Bruni and by the Director Eugenio Biamonte.
The resuscitation doctors, with hemodynamics directed by Ciro Indolfi, stabilized the patient, managing to keep him alive for three long days with his heart no longer beating.
The only hope was to act by doing a heart transplant. Today, in fact, the patient was transferred to the Ismett in Palermo through the 118 means, with a journey lasting 5 hours. Arriving at the facility, the patient was accepted to be placed on the transplant list. Although the surgery was very complicated, it went well and without any complications.
Medicine today has painted the pages of life, recalling that healthcare in the Calabria Region can also be excellent and above all saving the life of a patient.
