Italy on Alert for Presence of Fentanyl in Seized Heroin
The National Rapid Warning System for Drugs (NEWS-D) has issued an alert for the presence of fentanyl in heroin seized in the Perugia area of Italy. This is the first time that fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid drug, has been found in heroin in the country.
Fentanyl is typically used as an anesthetic and analgesic to treat severe pain, especially oncological pain. However, in the United States, its use as a narcotic has become widespread, leading to a high number of overdoses. Like morphine, fentanyl must be used under strict medical supervision due to its potent effects.
The misuse of opioids, including fentanyl, can have serious health effects, even leading to death. Symptoms of fentanyl overdose include sedation, drowsiness, mental confusion, nausea, vomiting, and respiratory depression, among others. Inhalation of illegally manufactured fentanyl is particularly dangerous.
In response to the alert, a national prevention plan has been activated to combat the improper use of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids. The plan involves alerting police forces and competent administrations to strengthen monitoring and increase awareness in potentially affected sectors.
The NEWS-D, established in 2009 by the Department for Anti-Drug Policies and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, works to identify potentially dangerous drug-related phenomena and provide prompt alerts to protect public health. The system allows for the implementation of necessary measures to address emergencies and combat drug trafficking.
Authorities are urging caution and vigilance to prevent the spread of fentanyl and protect the health and safety of the Italian population.
