Ligurian Regional Council Approves Free Treatments for Type 1 Diabetes and Fibromyalgia
The Ligurian Regional Council has approved measures to provide free treatments for two pathologies that are not covered by the National Health Service. On the proposal of the Health Councilor Angelo Gratarola, the council has approved measures to benefit those suffering from type 1 diabetes mellitus and fibromyalgia.
For type 1 diabetes mellitus, the council has approved the reimbursement of the drug Baqsimi (glucagon) for the entire year of 2024. This life-saving drug is used to treat severe hypoglycaemia when the patient cannot eat or drink. It is particularly useful for children who may have difficulty swallowing or injecting glucagon. This measure guarantees access to therapy paid for by the regional health service, ensuring the safety of young patients even in school settings.
In the case of fibromyalgia, the council has recognized the right to free pharmacological treatments for the entire year of 2024. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pathology characterized by widespread pain, muscle stiffness, sleep disorders, chronic tiredness, and reduced mood. The disease affects around 700 people in Liguria and can compromise the performance of common daily activities, as well as having a negative impact on most aspects related to the quality of life. At the moment, therapies for fibromyalgia are not provided by the National Health Service, so the Liguria Region is stepping in to address this issue while waiting for the disease to be recognized at a national level.
These measures are a significant step in providing support and relief to individuals suffering from these two conditions. The Ligurian Regional Council’s decision to offer free treatments for type 1 diabetes mellitus and fibromyalgia demonstrates a commitment to improving the accessibility of healthcare for all residents.
