Italy on High Alert for Dengue as Temperatures Rise
As the heatwave hits Italy, the dengue alert has been raised with increased surveillance and clean-up efforts. So far in 2023, there have been a total of 95 dengue infections in Lazio and over three hundred throughout the country. While not a pandemic like Covid-19, the spread of dengue is still a serious concern.
The Ministry of Health has taken action by providing two orders of vaccines totaling three thousand doses to be available for those traveling to high-risk areas. The alert was first raised almost a month ago by the prevention directorate of the Ministry of Health with measures in ports and airports for surveillance.
The Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci, emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and not lowering our guard against dengue. Discussions are underway to implement rapid testing at airports for travelers arriving from at-risk countries. Additionally, a communication campaign on dengue is being considered to raise awareness among travelers.
The Ministry has issued a new circular directing the Regions to implement prevention measures and training for healthcare workers on dengue. Citizens are also urged to take preventive measures such as using mosquito repellents and removing stagnant water sources that could attract mosquitoes.
Dengue, a viral disease transmitted by mosquito bites, causes symptoms such as fever, severe headaches, muscle and joint pain, and skin irritations. The increase in dengue cases in Europe is attributed to the movement of goods and people.
