General medicine. Fimmg against the SMI and Simet strike: “It only damages citizens”

The main trade union sticks to the two minor acronyms that have called the protest for 1 and 2 March. Scotti: “At this moment the strike seems to me to be an act for its own sake, while I think that joint forms of protest should have been found aimed at highlighting, and not at discharging its citizens, the discomfort of the medical category”.

17 FEB – A strike action by local doctors of the agreed area “not agreed and carried out in a period of state of emergency due to the Covid-19 epidemic only damages the citizen. I don’t think this is the time for actions of this kind ”. They are the statements of Silvestro Scotti in reference to the strike proclaimed for 1 and 2 March by the trade unions Smi and Simet with the closure of the clinics.

“At this moment – underlines the secretary of family doctors – the strike seems to me an act for its own sake, while I think that joint forms of protest should have been found aimed at highlighting, and not at discharging its citizens, the unease of the category medical “. Scotti therefore underlines the inappropriateness of a strike at this time, while agreeing on the reasons for the discomfort reported by general practitioners in recent months: “Obviously we agree and have repeatedly denounced the difficulties that doctors face every day in their studies, starting from the workloads and the excess of bureaucratic tasks to be fulfilled in relation to the pandemic, all time subtracted from contact with patients. To this is added the last stop of the Senate to the compensation to the families of doctors who died of Covid, a real slap in the face of the dignity of the category. We believe – he adds – that a smear campaign against family doctors has been underway for weeks now, increasingly subject to attacks and even episodes of violence ». However, he specifies, “it is not the time to strike and we are surprised that the subjects in charge of controlling the strike initiatives do not intervene”.

Scotti recalls in the current medical contract that “in the event of exceptional events, strikes are considered suspended: and the state of emergency for the pandemic is in force until March 31”. As for the numbers of the strike proclaimed, “it could concern 1 out of 10 doctors in the agreed area, or less than 10%. In fact, the two trade unions SMI and SIMET have less than 4,000 members ”.

We recall that the Fimmg has more than 21 thousand members, out of a total of about 34,700 doctors registered with trade unions, to which another 8 thousand non-union doctors are added.
