Science has made an important discovery that could revolutionize therapy for those suffering from diabetes. A recent study published in Nature Nanotechnology reveals the development of a “smart insulin” that could potentially change the way insulin is administered to diabetic patients.
Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, known as hyperglycemia, due to an alteration in the quantity or function of insulin. Symptoms of diabetes include tiredness, increased urine volume, weight loss, abdominal pain, increased appetite, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, and acetone breath. The new smart insulin is designed to be taken orally and features a coating that protects the insulin from breakdown by gastric acids, allowing it to safely reach the liver where it is needed. This method of insulin delivery is more precise and efficient, circulating the insulin quickly throughout the body and reducing the risk of low blood sugar levels.
While the tests have only been conducted on animals so far with promising results, human trials are expected to begin in 2025.
