Jessica Antón, the Health Manager of Lambayeque, recently audited the medical staff in her region using a unique approach. In an unexpected initiative, she posed as a patient and visited various health centers to assess the quality of care being provided.
Antón’s inspections took place at the Toribia Castro and José Olaya health centers, as well as at medical points in the Picsi and Pimentel districts. She revealed that some of the establishments were found closed and unattended, with staff members sleeping or eating at inappropriate times.
During an interview on RPP, Antón highlighted the need for improved hospital treatment and care in response to numerous complaints about inadequate medical care and mistreatment of patients. She emphasized that future visits will be coordinated with the Public Ministry to impose criminal sanctions and ensure accountability for the negligence found.
The Ombudsman’s Office previously requested the Lambayeque Regional Health Management to address the complaints from patients covered by the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS). One case involved a pregnant woman who was denied care and transferred multiple times, ultimately requiring treatment at a private clinic.
This is not an isolated incident, as similar cases of misconduct have been reported in other regions of Peru. In Huancayo, medical staff held a party during working hours at the Huayucachi Health Center, while allegations of a similar event were made against healthcare personnel in Tarma.
Victims of poor care or misconduct in health centers are urged to file complaints with the National Health Superintendency (SuSalud) for further investigation. As more cases of negligence come to light, it is essential to hold those responsible accountable and ensure the delivery of appropriate medical care to all patients.
