The S. Croce e Carle hospital in Cuneo has successfully applied a groundbreaking technique known as hypercutaneous cryoablation on an elderly patient with comorbidities. This innovative method allows for the destruction of tumor masses without the need for invasive surgery.

The procedure involves inserting a needle exactly inside the lesion, guided by radiological images, and then freezing the tumor with a gas at a temperature of -40°. The patient, who is around 80 years old and suffers from various pathologies, was not a candidate for traditional surgery. However, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Interventional Radiology, Anesthesiology, Urology, and Oncology, the patient was able to undergo cryoablation and immediately return to the ward after a successful procedure.

Dr. Alberto Balderi, the director of Interventional Radiology, explains that hypercutaneous cryoablation is particularly suitable for patients who cannot undergo traditional surgery due to related pathologies or advanced age. The minimally invasive technique reduces the risk of complications, shortens hospitalization periods, and is especially effective for treating kidney tumors without damaging healthy tissues.

Dr. Enrico Peano, an interventional radiologist involved in the procedure, highlights the collaborative efforts with other departments in making the decision to intervene with cryoablation. The patient had a difficult-to-recognize renal lesion, which was successfully treated using the cryoablation system. The technique, which allows for examination similar to a CT scan and fluoroscopic guidance, resulted in a perfect success for the patient.

The use of hypercutaneous cryoablation at the S. Croce e Carle hospital highlights the potential for innovative and collaborative approaches in providing minimally invasive solutions for patients who are not candidates for traditional surgery. The success of this procedure offers hope for those with similar medical challenges in the future.
