Symptoms of Hypomania: A Closer Look at this Psychopathological Condition

A condition of elevated mood that lasts over time, associated with a poor need for sleep and an increase in initiative and energy: these are the symptoms of hypomania, a psychopathological condition which is included among mental disorders and which requires timely intervention by the psychiatrist.

We spoke with Mara Cigala Fulgosi, psychiatrist of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Unit of the Zucchi Clinical Institutes of Carate Brianza to better understand the nature of this condition.

According to Dr. Fulgosi, “Hypomania is a psychopathological condition that fits within a broader category of disorders, namely that of Mood Disorders and in particular Bipolar Disorder. This condition is characterized by periods with hypomanic or euphoric symptoms that alternate with periods of the opposite polarity, of a depressive type.”

It might seem surprising that a condition of elevated mood could be considered a disorder, but as Dr. Fulgosi explains, it presents certain risks. “The condition of hypomania is perceived by the person as a state of extreme well-being and not as an expression of a disorder. However, it puts the person at risk of carrying out dangerous actions for their physical safety such as driving fast, using drugs and excessive alcohol, but also making rash choices that can compromise the relational or economic sphere.”

In discussing the diagnosis and treatment of hypomania, Dr. Fulgosi highlights the role of family and friends in recognizing the early signs of the condition. “The family unit or friend network is often fundamental in these cases. In fact, it is frequently the people closest to us who are the first to hear the alarm bells and recognize the first symptoms.”

In terms of prevention and early diagnosis, Dr. Fulgosi emphasizes the importance of recognizing certain alarm bells such as an increase in energy and a reduced need for sleep, also associated with risky behaviors such as excessive spending, dangerous sexual relationships, and fast driving.

The treatment process, according to Dr. Fulgosi, typically involves pharmacotherapy with the addition of psychotherapy for greater awareness of the disease and managing episodes of illness.

Overall, hypomania presents itself as a potentially dangerous condition that requires recognition and timely intervention for proper management.
