Insomnia: tips for a better rest

About 12 million Italians, as many as 1 in 4 adults, suffer from insomnia, according to the most recent data from the Italian Association for Sleep Medicine. And of these, 20% are very young, children and teenagers. Data in hand, insomnia is a problem that affects a large number of people and can have a significant impact on the quality of life. Feeling tired in the morning, not being ready to face the activities of the day are factors that contribute to stress and in the long run can have negative effects on working, social and relational life.

Here are some habits and strategies recommended by experts to improve your sleep and get a good rest.

Tips for better sleep

To be able to fall asleep and sleep better it is important to follow a routine, going to bed and possibly getting up at the same time and avoiding afternoon rests. There is also a recommended sleep duration which, according to international guidelines, for adults is 7 to 9 hours per night. Furthermore, we must avoid using smartphones, tablets and PCs immediately before going to bed, reserving an hour free from the devices. Another important precaution is to keep the rooms ventilated and at the right temperature and to use the bedroom only for sleeping and not for other daily activities, such as working and eating.

Sleep and nutrition

Regarding nutrition, it is better to have a light dinner to avoid waking up at night due to hunger. Then pay attention to stimulating substances, such as coffee and energizing drinks, the consumption of which should be avoided or limited in the hours before going to bed. Even alcohol, contrary to what one might think, is not a friend of sleep: if at the moment it can promote drowsiness, it subsequently promotes awakenings and an irregular sleep.
