Internists Gather in Santiago to Analyze COPD: Insights and Developments

More than 120 internists convene in Santiago to analyze COPD

More than 120 internists from across the country have gathered in Santiago on Thursday and Friday for the XVII Meeting of the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Group of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI). The meeting is taking place at the Faculty of Medicine of the USC, where experts will be discussing the latest diagnostic and treatment developments in COPD and its comorbidities.

The agenda for the meeting includes deep dives into topics such as the relationship between COPD and sexual disorders, the quality of life of patients with the disease, alcohol consumption implications, current treatments, vaccination news, cardiovascular risks, and the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and COPD. Additionally, the VII edition of the Miguel Ɓngel de la Puente Awards will be presented during the event.

According to SEMI, there has been a paradigm shift in understanding COPD over the last two decades, transitioning from being viewed as a primarily pulmonary disease with limited therapeutic options to a complex and systemic condition.

In Spain, the prevalence of COPD in the general population aged 40 to 80 years is 11.8%, with up to 79 comorbidities associated with the disease.

The program for Thursday includes discussions on clinical cases, updates on publications and conferences, a talk on COPD and alcohol, and the annual SEMI COPD group meeting. The inaugural conference on Saturday will focus on the role of internists in managing allergies to hymenoptera.

The meeting also includes the V COPD Residents Meeting of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI) on Saturday.
