At the end of November 2023, the medical device manufacturer medi invited selected lip and lymphedema bloggers to Bayreuth for an exclusive meeting. In addition to a detailed tour of the production and the new medi Tower, the main focus was on personal exchange and valuable feedback from the lip and lymphedema community.
“Together unique!” is not only the motto of medi’s current design campaign, but was also successfully implemented at the exclusive blogger meeting in Bayreuth. Over two days, seven lip and lymphedema bloggers met with medi product managers to exchange ideas, learn from each other and share knowledge. Stefanie Porst, Team Lead Product Marketing Compression at medi, about the initiative: “Improving the quality of life of patients has always been our goal. To do this, we have to keep our ear close to the market. Through close cooperation with selected bloggers, we receive valuable impulses directly from the lip and lymphedema community, can provide targeted information and optimize our products.” Vanessa Reins, Carina Schmalenberg and Caroline Sprott were invited with a diagnosis of lipedema and Isabell Regensdorff, Ursula Thomé and Jürgen Jakob with a diagnosis of lymphedema. Jana Crämer was diagnosed with combined lipedema and lymphedema in 2022.
From thread to individual compression care
During a tour of the production and the new medi Tower, the bloggers were given exclusive insights behind the scenes of the traditional company. Jürgen Jakob was particularly enthusiastic about the tour of the production: “From the knitting factory and assembly to quality assurance, storage and shipping – it is impressive how many people are involved in the production of a medical compression stocking and how many production steps intertwine to ensure ours Producing individual flat knit supplies. That’s really sophisticated craftsmanship!” It takes over 30 steps to create a medical compression garment using state-of-the-art knitting technology and detailed handwork.
Intensive networking and continuous exchange
In order to continually develop products, medi relies on an innovative research and development department, a mix of surveys in specialist retailers and direct feedback from users. “In everything we do, we consistently focus on the needs of patients and specialist retailers,” explains Doreen Potzel, Team Lead Product Management Oedema at medi. “It is important to us to understand patients even better in order to be able to respond individually to their needs. This is the only way we can enable real innovations and solutions with heart – patients should not only need our products because of their illness, but love them!”
In advance of the visit, the bloggers asked their followers to express wishes and ask questions on four subject areas:

The most frequently asked questions were then answered by those responsible for product marketing, product management and research and development at the meeting in Bayreuth – and subsequently played out by the bloggers via their social media channels. Vanessa Reins, representing her blogger colleagues:
“It’s unbelievable how much interested feedback and suggestions we received. We are very pleased to be able to give other lip and lymphedema sufferers a voice. medi can incorporate these experiences into product development in order to make medical compression fittings even better “It’s nice to be able to use my social media presence to share information and advice, as well as provide insight into my personal experiences.”
One request in particular was frequently asked by the community: to introduce the side seam innovation on the mediven cozy for the mediven 550 medical compression stocking. Doreen Potzel says: “Patient wishes have already been successfully implemented in the past, for example with new trendy colors and patterns or with the introduction of additions such as the knee and elbow functional zone for better wearing comfort. We are taking the community’s suggestion for the side seam on the mediven 550 Of course, we’re happy to come up and check it internally.”
Caroline Sprott about the exchange at the medi headquarters: “It was fantastic! We made exciting plans for future care options and talked about possible events – and took a lot with us for the future. The journey through life with lipedema or lymphedema is one, which many of those affected think they have to go through silently and alone – until they discover the power of the community. Compression connects!”
