Living with cancer: Online men’s meeting “Good against mental cinema” starts

Project by Mainz University Medicine and cancer counseling centers wins innovation competition – first meeting on January 25th.

The Institute for Medical Biometry, Epidemiology and Informatics at the University Medical Center Mainz, in collaboration with 15 cancer counseling centers, successfully carried out the study “Paving paths for men – gender-specific assignment and concepts for outpatient cancer counseling” (WAG-ES!). At the end of the study, the idea of an online service for men suffering from cancer emerged. With their concept, they have now won the “Innovation for Patient Care” innovation prize from the biopharmaceutical company Ipsen, worth 11,000 euros. At the online meeting “Gut gegen Kopfkino” those affected can find out more in short specialist lectures and exchange ideas in a safe space. The first men’s meeting will take place on January 25th, 2024 at 7 p.m. under the motto “Silence is silver, speaking is gold”.

Like women, men suffer from cancer-related limitations in physical functions, everyday activities and social relationships. Affected men need appropriate support, but use psychosocial help less often than women.

“Especially when a cancer diagnosis turns your life upside down, information and mutual support help. Therefore, as part of our WAG-ES! study, we have developed a concept for an online group offering that is intended to make it easier for men in particular to access psychosocial support and exchange. The leitmotif of the online meeting ‘Good against mental cinema’ is based on the comment of a cancer patient who, when developing the idea, described cancer counseling as ‘good against mental cinema’,” says Oliver Bayer, study leader of the WAG-ES! study at the institute for Medical Biometry, Epidemiology and Informatics (IMBEI) at the Mainz University Medical Center.

The project, carried out by 15 cancer counseling centers in collaboration with the Mainz University Medical Center, was named winner of the “Innovation for Patient Care” innovation competition run by the biopharmaceutical company Ipsen. The project is one of a total of three prize winners who were selected from numerous submissions by a top-class jury. For the third time, the competition honored projects that sustainably improve the quality of life of people with cancer and/or their relatives. The award is endowed with 11,000 euros each. “I am really pleased about the recognition of the project and, above all, about the opportunity to finance the online men’s meetings for two years,” says Gudrun Bruns, head of the cancer advice center of the Tumor Network in Münsterland, who works together with Oliver Bayer accepted the prize in Berlin.

From January 2024, the online men’s meeting “Gut gegen Kopfkino” will take place on the last Thursday of every month. The online meetings are professionally moderated and after a short keynote speech there is room for questions and exchange. Participation is free and, if desired, anonymous.
