Alarm from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) as Measles Cases Surge in Europe
During the European Immunization Week, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has issued a warning about the alarming increase in measles and whooping cough cases across Europe. The ECDC reported at least 5,770 cases of measles and 5 deaths between March 2023 and the end of February 2024.
The highest risk is among children under one year old, who are too young to be vaccinated. According to the ECDC, these infants should be protected by community immunity, which is achieved when a high percentage of the population is vaccinated and provides indirect protection to those who are not vaccinated.
The surge in measles cases is particularly concerning as the disease can have serious complications, especially in young children. The ECDC is urging countries to prioritize vaccination efforts and ensure that all children are up to date with their immunizations.
Parents are also being reminded of the importance of vaccinating their children on time to protect them from preventable diseases. The ECDC is working with health authorities across Europe to contain the spread of measles and prevent further outbreaks.
As the number of measles cases continues to rise, the ECDC is urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the disease. Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
