TRIESTE. Despite a significant increase in the number of places available nationwide, this year for access to Medicine and Surgery it will jostle almost as much as previous years. The call, unique for all of Italy, has made 14,020 places available against 13,072 in 2020: there will be almost a thousand more future doctors, equal to + 7.3%. The growth is linked both to the Covid-19 emergency, which made it necessary to strengthen the forces in hospitals and health facilities, and to the emptying of wards due to retirement: a process that has lasted for at least a decade, accelerated in the last three years by the system ” Quota100 “. On the other hand, the variations on the places available nationally for Dentistry are minimal: they are 1,253 throughout Italy (they were 1,231 in the past year), Trieste makes 40 available.
Last year, just over 30% of candidates had passed the entrance test, the only one for Medicine and Dentistry; this year the students who will take the exam at the Trieste university for the 180 places available (plus 40 in Dentistry) are 614. The success rate could therefore remain almost unchanged, even if the reality is more complex: from a couple of years the candidates are no longer obliged to take the exam in the place where they would like to study and the ranking, unique for Medicine and Dentistry, is drawn up at national level.

The mechanism for the health professions is less complex: the call in this case is based on the regional indication and the 734 candidates for the three-year courses who will take the exam in Trieste will compete for a total of 321 places. The exam for Medicine and Dentistry – multiple choice test with 60 questions to be answered in 100 minutes – will take place on 3 September in two locations, in Trieste (buildings H3 and C1 of the piazzale Europa campus) and in Pordenone, in the exhibition space . For the health professions, on the other hand, with 10 three-year courses, of which 8 with teaching offices in Trieste and 2 with headquarters in Udine, the exams will be held on 14 September in Trieste (buildings H3 and C1 campus in piazzale Europa).
For the only inter-university master’s course, the new Nursing and Midwifery Sciences based in Trieste and 30 places available, the call has not yet been published, but the exam is scheduled for 29 October. The new course, unique in the region, aims at training personnel with executive responsibilities. At the three-year level, the highest number of places available is for the Nursing course, with 150 places; 30 will be for physiotherapy and 30 for dental hygiene, 16 for courses in psychiatric rehabilitation techniques and 16 for prevention techniques in the environment and in the workplace.
As for the three-year inter-university degrees, this year’s novelty, the course in Health Assistant, will put out 40 places; 20 will be those for the course in Speech Therapy; 19 for Obstetrics, all based this year in Trieste. In Udine, the three-year inter-university courses in Biomedical laboratory techniques and medical radiology techniques for images and radiotherapy will be activated.
To help students prepare and give them indications on how to conduct the tests, this summer the University of Trieste organized preparatory courses for the entrance tests, in presence on the central campus, for the third consecutive year. There were 350 places available, the students were able to take lessons on all the disciplines involved in the entrance exam: mathematics, logic, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology, genetics. One lesson covered the procedures before, during and after the test; another hour was dedicated to meeting tutor students to allow children to ask questions and be explained by those who already attend these study paths how to best face them. –
