Ars and Ministry of Health Join Forces to Prevent Dengue Spread in Sicily

In light of the growing risk of dengue fever spreading to Italy, the president of the Ars Gaetano Galvagno and the general director of Prevention of the Ministry of Health Francesco Vaia held a crucial meeting at Palazzo dei Normanni this morning. While no cases have been reported in Sicily yet, the institutions are not taking any chances and are actively working to prevent the viral disease from reaching the region.

The Ministry of Health has already issued directives to the Maritime, Air and Border Health Office (Usmaf) to conduct regular inspections of planes and ships to carry out disinfection activities against dengue-carrying mosquitoes. The collaboration between national and local authorities is crucial in combating the risk of dengue spread in Italy.

Dengue fever, predominantly seen in South America, has become a significant concern in Italy, with 82 indigenous cases reported in 2023. However, the actual number of cases might be higher as some infections may go undiagnosed due to lack of symptoms.

Experts emphasize the importance of prevention and urge municipalities and regions to take proactive measures to prevent the spread of dengue. While the tiger mosquito is not the primary vector for dengue in Italy, steps must be taken to prevent the disease from taking root in the country.

Epidemiologists advise against alarmism but stress the need for prompt action to prevent the spread of dengue in Italy. With the combined efforts of the Ministry of Health, local authorities, and the community, the hope is to keep Sicily and the rest of Italy safe from the threat of dengue fever.
