“Melanoma, third most frequent cancer among over 50s”. Focus on “Feeling good”

The latest episode of “Star bene” on Telelibertà focused on the important topic of skin cancer, particularly melanoma, which is the third most frequent cancer among people over 50. Hosted by journalist Marzia Foletti, the episode featured guests Massimo Gasperini, head of Dermatology at the Piacenza hospital, patient Luigi Colla, and Luigi Cavanna, an oncologist and the scientific director of the program.

Gasperini highlighted the prevalence of skin cancer, stating that it is the most common type of cancer. He emphasized that while most cases have a positive diagnosis, there are different types of skin cancer, with melanoma representing 5% of all cases and its incidence on the rise. Other types include sarcomas, cutaneous lymphomas, and rarer types derived from nerve cells.

The episode also featured the testimony of Luigi Colla, a skin cancer survivor who emphasized the importance of early detection. He shared his experience of discovering a strange itch on his shoulder, which led to a diagnosis of melanoma. Fortunately, the cancer was caught in time, and Colla did not require chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Cavanna stressed the importance of regular examinations by dermatologists and understanding one’s level of risk for skin cancer. He emphasized that the damage from ultraviolet rays manifests slowly and can be prevented with proper care and attention.

In addition to the discussion on skin cancer, the episode also included the column “Feeling good at the table,” which highlighted Piacenza wines with Sofia Serafino of Coldiretti at the Covered Market in via Farnesiana. The episode was made possible by Amop and provided valuable information on health and wellness.
