Calenda: «April 25th is not a sectarian event but a holiday for all democrats»
At the crossroads with via Boschetti, at the head of the procession, behind a banner with red writing «Now and always democracy is defended», representatives of the Jewish Brigade, of the Jewish Community and some exponents of Action gathered, including including the party secretary Carlo Calenda. Who, commenting on the protests in Rome against the Jewish Brigade, said: «These are brutal, unworthy acts of violence. We are here today for an April 25th that belongs to everyone, a republican holiday that brings together history, memory and the desire to preserve them.” And to those who ask him if he fears protest, he replies: «I don’t care at all, I think that April 25th belongs to no one but the Democrats. Our party takes its name from the Action party. The partisan shareholders contributed to the liberation of Italy. The rest interests me little. Anyone who makes it a sectarian event against others does not know the profound meaning of liberation”, he concluded.
Then a comment on Minister Matteo Salvini’s visit to the Milan Memorial: “Everyone celebrates as they want.” Just behind Calenda is the banner of the Jewish Brigade, the formation of Zionist fighters who took part in the Italian campaign against the armies of the Third Reich alongside the Anglo-American troops. Behind again, flags of Ukraine. While alongside Calenda, in addition to Action senator Mariastella Gelmini, there is Daniele Nahum, Milanese city councilor, former PD, and now Action candidate in the next European elections. In the morning, Nahum, commenting on the events that occurred in Rome for the celebrations of April 25th, had said that «on a day of celebrations, a moment of unity, there are still those who have the only interest in dividing and wanting to make their idea prevail with the force. These fascists, because they are such, should be reminded that the Jewish Brigade fought with the allies and contributed to liberating our country from the Nazi-fascists. Maybe, between one slogan and another, we should remind him which side the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem was on.” (Matteo Castagnoli)
