A spacecraft that will deliberately crash into an asteroid is preparing to be launched by NASA to save the earth.
The double asteroid reorientation test spacecraft DART is performing NASA’s double asteroid reorientation test mission. It is scheduled to launch in November and will be completed using Space X’s Falcon 9 carrier rocket.
The goal of the mission is “Dimorphos” (Dimorphos, meaning “in two forms” in Greek), a near-Earth asteroid “Didimos” (Dimorphos, meaning “twin” in Greek) Small satellites in operation.
The two “Demos” (asteroids) and “Demos” (small moons) will be 6,835,083 miles (11 million kilometers) apart from each other in September 2022.
NASA will let their spacecraft crash into the asteroid’s satellite, in order to see what happens to its speed in space. The operation of small satellites is expected to change by 1%. Although it doesn’t look like much, it will shorten its orbiting cycle by nearly seven minutes.
According to CNN, this will be the first comprehensive demonstration of this type of technology on behalf of planetary defense by NASA.
