On June 14th, many pharmacies throughout Germany will remain closed. The pharmacies close in protest and declare June 14 a nationwide day of protest. The supply of medicines is maintained – but only via the emergency pharmacies. The pharmacists are reacting to the health policy decisions of the federal government. “One thing is certain for our profession: the federal government provoked this day of protest,” explains the President of ABDA – the Federal Union of German Pharmacists’ Associations, Gabriele Regina Overwiening. “Supply bottlenecks, staff shortages and underfunding that has existed for years. Because the federal government repeatedly ignores the problems of public pharmacies in its legislative projects, it is destabilizing the supply of medicines in Germany. For months we have been pointing out the explosive situation in personal discussions, interviews and PR campaigns The pharmacy teams save lives every day by procuring alternative preparations for medicines that are not available. Instead of stabilizing the nationwide supply of medicines via local pharmacies, it is being weakened. Pharmacies have to close every day. University graduates of our field are less and less able to imagine going into self-employment, mainly because there is a lack of economic prospects. We have to draw attention to that,” says Overwiening.

The ABDA has now informed its member organizations on the day of the protest – also about the numerous support measures that will be provided by the federal association in the coming weeks. The chambers and associations, in turn, are currently communicating with the pharmacies in all federal states. This year’s “Pharmacy Day” on June 7th will also be marked by political protest.

dr Hans-Peter Hubmann, Chairman of the German Association of Pharmacists (DAV), adds: “Despite rising costs and inflation, pharmacies have not received any fee adjustments in the past ten years. It cannot go on like this. We urgently need to raise awareness among the population and politicians point out our difficult situation. I therefore call on all colleagues to take part in the nationwide protest day, June 14. Talk to your patients and explain why the protest of all pharmacies is the only option “To make our voice heard in politics. Talk more to your local politicians and the media on this day. Keep pointing out ABDA’s 10-point catalog of demands, in which we also call for the reduction of bureaucracy and Demand an end to zero returns. We have to show society how important pharmacies are for supply and how dramatic it would be if even more pharmacies as reliable, social contact points on site were to disappear forever.”
