Navigating the Complex Path to Becoming a Doctor: The Challenge of the ECOE Test at La Paz University Hospital

La Paz University Hospital to host ECOE test for Medicine students from Autonomous University of Madrid

Six years of career, study and examination of a MIR test, four or five years of specialty… but first, an ECOE test, unknown to many Spanish Health users. A complex compendium of tests and exams to train new doctors who, on many occasions, decide to leave the country in search of better job opportunities and salaries more in line with their levels of study.

Within this cluster of tests, the La Paz University Hospital will host this Saturday a total of 226 Medicine students from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) who will take the practical skills test (ECOE) to evaluate the students’ techniques and skills of the last medical course.

In addition to evaluating clinical skills, this practical test also explores the communication and technical skills and capabilities of final year students.

With a marked time of 10 minutes, they have two minutes to read the starting situation and eight minutes to resolve the clinical situation presented. The examination is divided into different stations that simulate different clinical scenarios and is based on the use of standardized patients (actors), mannequins (high-medium and low fidelity) or chairs (images and diagnostic tests).

These are presented in a context of a perfectly studied and delimited clinical situation that takes place in a real clinical environment, such as a consultation.

This edition will have 12 stations that take place simultaneously in the Outpatient Consultation area of the hospital. In total, three simultaneous rounds of 36 stations have been organized during three shifts, with the aim of evaluating the 226 students of the 18-24 class.

The organization of this activity represents a great logistical challenge in which more than 200 people have been involved, including actors and evaluators, as well as the technical staff who organized this test, such as wheel and station coordinators; administrative staff; audiovisual and simulation technicians; as well as bioinformatics engineers.

In this edition, the evaluation of students will be carried out in real time through the mobile phone, thanks to the REDCap app.
