Newborn baby saved thanks to ambulance with heart-lung machine – Healthcare

A little girl just a few weeks old was the first patient to board the Ecmo Mobile ambulance of the Cuore Monasterio hospital in Massa (Massa Carrara), a vehicle which has a heart-lung machine on board to treat pulmonary and cardiac pathologies.

The little girl, originally from the Pistoia area, felt ill on January 4th. Covid and respiratory syncytial virus, the cause of bronchiolitis in infants, have put her lungs to the test. The little girl was entrusted to the Meyer doctors but, faced with increasing respiratory fatigue, they decided to alert the Ecmo Team of the Massa hospital. On January 5th she was transferred to the Cuore hospital in Massa and admitted to intensive care, intubated for days and entrusted to the care of doctors and nurses; she tested negative for Covid, then for the flu virus. Slowly her lungs regained strength and her baby was extubated, then transferred to the pediatric hospital. On January 25th her resignation arrived and she returned home.

The Ecmo Mobile is designed and tailor-made to accommodate the pediatric Ecmo team of the Cuore di Massa hospital and its equipment, essential for the implantation of the heart-lung machine. The new ambulance, donated by the Rosa Prístina Foundation and inaugurated in December, made its first trip with this little girl. “It’s incredible – says the mother – I saw a real team in action, very quickly. The ambulance arrived, numerous people got out, they had backpacks, equipment, they took care of my little girl. I thank them infinitely”.
