Not just strawberries: these regional fruits and vegetables are in season in May

Finally strawberries again! With May there will be local fruit again – even if so far it’s only the red fruits. You can read here which types of vegetables and fruit are in season this month and are available regionally.

radish

Fresh, crunchy and beautifully spicy – radishes go perfectly with a hearty snack. Whether pure or in a salad, grab the tubers! Because they are not only delicious, but also really healthy and have anti-inflammatory and antibiotic effects.

Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi simply tastes best freshly harvested! Now you can buy the delicious vegetables from the region again. But don’t just focus on the tuber, the leaves are also very nutritious. In some cases they even have more nutrients than the tuber itself. So be sure to cook them or use the small leaves raw for seasoning.

cauliflower

The smell that comes from cooking cauliflower is admittedly not particularly pleasant. However, the vegetables taste even better. It’s in season from May, so grab it. Because cauliflower is particularly digestible and rich in minerals and vitamins. Also try eating cauliflower raw – this way the healthy ingredients are retained and you avoid the unpleasant smell of cooking.

Salat

Salad is simply the classic summer dish – how good that many leaf salads are finally in season again. Whether it’s nutty-tasting oak leaf lettuce, curly-leaf Lollo Rosso or normal lettuce – bring summer to your plate fresh from the local field.

Leeks and spring onions

Leeks and their smaller relatives, spring onions, are perfect for seasoning. From May, the sticks will be available fresh again in Germany – enjoy them raw, cooked or steamed.

asparagus

Of course, you can still enjoy asparagus from the region in May. But hurry – the German asparagus season will end again in mid-June.

Spinach

Spinach is simply an all-rounder: The green vegetable supplies your body with iron, magnesium, potassium and calcium and is bursting with vitamin C. Enjoy home-grown spinach cooked, raw in a salad or in a green smoothie.

Onions

They simply belong in every kitchen: although not yet fresh from the field, onions are still available from stock in May. You can enjoy freshly harvested onions again from August.

Carrots

Carrots are also not available fresh from your trusted farmer in May, but only from stock. But as early as June you can enjoy the crunchy roots straight from the field.

New potatoes

Just like with carrots, the potato harvest in Germany doesn’t start until June, so you have to use stock in June. However, from the end of May you can enjoy the delicious new potatoes.

Strawberries

We simply love them, the sweet little fruits: Strawberries still taste best picked straight from the field. Instead of buying them at the supermarket, look for a farm in your area that offers pick-your-own strawberries.

Apples

You can still access the apple stocks from the last harvest. However, stocks will slowly empty as May approaches. So take another look – apples fresh from the tree will not be available again in Germany until August.
