Currently, in many countries, the average age of the population tends to rise. This figure reflects an increase in aging at the expense of new births. As the Alzheimer’s Disease International Report states, the population with dementia could even triple over the next 30 years. For this reason, many researches are moving in this direction. A systematic Italian-Swedish review in 2019 reviewed 39 studies by comparing the data that emerged from the surveys on about 58,000 enrolled. In 33 studies, attention is paid to some particular actions associated with cognitive decline. Not memory loss but this body movement could be the wake-up call for dementia and let’s see what it is below.
Because it’s important to spot the signs of cognitive impairment early
Body movements can hide signs of change that we are often unaware of. This is what happens in the gait of walking according to the opinion of scholars who have identified this factor as a possible predictor of dementia.
When it comes to dementia, it indicates a general decline in cognitive and mental faculties that often occurs in old age. However, rather early forms whose signs can manifest themselves as early as 40 years are not excluded. Dementia is part of those neurodegenerative diseases that involve a progressive loss of various mental faculties. Alzheimer’s, for example, predicts significant memory loss as a hallmark of this clinical condition.
It often happens that the diagnosis of dementia occurs at an already quite advanced stage, when the decay began to take place several years earlier. For this reason, the commitment of research in identifying prodromal signals is aimed at improving the timing of diagnosis to make it ever earlier.
Not memory loss but this body movement could be the wake-up call for dementia
In an attempt to identify the early signs of a possible dementia, the Italian-Swedish research team reviewed the most recent studies. The data revealed that a possible gateway to identifying such changes could lie in walking pace. Researchers showed that reduced walking speed could indicate the onset of cognitive decline and dementia. Of the 39 studies reviewed, 33 of them showed agreement on this indicator. According to experts, cognitive impairment could often involve motor control areas of the brain.
That is why, in this perspective, the study proposes to deepen the research on the measurement of motor slowdown. In this way, the researchers say, a new piece could be inserted on the knowledge of the mechanisms underlying neuronal decay. With this in mind, it is also important to carry out constant work on prevention. That is why in a previous article we illustrated 3 strategies to oxygenate the brain and keep a healthy and strong mind.

Amazing how the brain can eliminate toxic substances if this daily action is carried out correctly
