Omicron BA.5, the coronavirus strain that is currently overtaking other variants in infection and has become ‘dominant’, has the ability to reinfect people ‘within weeks’. Andrew Roberston, the chief health officer for Western Australia, told News.com that although it was previously believed that most people would either maintain some level of protection against reinfection (thanks to the vaccine) or have maintained a certain level of natural immunity, this “is not the case” with the more recent strain. “What we are seeing is an increasing number of people who have been infected with BA.2 and then infected after four weeks,” explained the doctor in an interview with the official Australian website.
