In Italy there are 245,000 people suffering from schizophrenia, a disease that is at times still obscure that sees among the causes a genetic predisposition in addition to conditions of psychological-environmental stress and the early use of substances. The film “My brother, my sister” starring Alessandro Preziosi and Claudia Pandolfi is out today on Netflix, directed by Roberto Capucci. Schizophrenia and its impact on families are at the center of history for the first time. This was announced by the Italian Society of Psychiatry (SIP), which actively participated in its realization by providing scientific advice for the script and for the training of the actors.

In the scenes, in fact, we talk about pharmacological treatments, psychotherapeutic and rehabilitative interventions and the determining role of family dynamics. On the occasion of World Mental Health Day on 10 October, thanks to “My brother, my sister”, the spotlight is placed on patients, often wrapped in stigma and prejudices, and on the world of caregivers that gravitate around you. “In this film the person with schizophrenic psychosis is shown in his entirety, without prejudices and conspiracies, and with the awareness that this disorder today can have a better prognosis than in the past, thanks to the progress of research that guarantees a substantial improvement in the quality of life of patients – explains Massimo di Giannantonio, president of SIP – The work done by the director and the actors under the supervision of the Italian Society of Psychiatry helps to make the general public understand the complexity and suffering of this serious disorder “.
