Region, the San Gerardo hospital will be Ircss in “Medicine for rare diseases”

The Regional Council has declared coherent and compatible, with the regional health planning, the request of the ASST to change the area of recognition of the future Irccs San Gerardo dei Tintori di Monza Foundation to “Medicine for rare diseases”.

In September 2020, the Regional Council had approved the formal request presented by the Asst of Monza to transform the San Gerardo into a Scientific Research and Treatment Institute (IRCCS). Today, on the proposal of the vice-president and councilor for Welfare, Letizia Moratti, she declared coherent and compatible, with the regional health planning, the ASST request to change the recognition area of the future Irccs Foundation to “Medicine for rare diseases” San Gerardo dei Tintori of Monza.

The Board has given a mandate to the Welfare Directorate to transmit the provision and further technical documentation to the Ministry of Health for the continuation of the recognition process.

The novelty concerns precisely the field of assistance and research activities by the subjects that will converge in the IRCCS: the San Gerardo hospital, the Monza and Brianza Foundation for the child and his mother (Fmbbm) and the Tettamanti Foundation.

“The new IRCCS will in fact deal with research and study of biomolecular mechanisms and the development of innovative therapies in the preclinical and clinical field of genetic diseases, both at the onset in pediatric age and in adults”, reads a note.

These are all rare diseases for which San Gerardo and Fmbbm are already part of the European reference networks (Ern), namely: craniofacial malformations on a genetic basis, rare haematological diseases and liver disorders, congenital metabolic diseases and also rare pulmonary and renal dysfunctions , rheumatological and oncological, both in adults and children.

“The strengthening and high specialization of research – comments the councilor for Welfare, Moratti – through technological innovation and multidisciplinary and multisectoral teams, are qualifying elements that give added value to our healthcare, which is already of excellence. A commitment that in this case, if possible, is even more significant. In fact, attention to rare diseases is already fundamental, because they often do not receive adequate responses to needs, precisely because they are little known. But this attention becomes even more relevant in the face of situations that involve the smallest citizens: our children. Therefore, bringing the request presented by the Asst of Monza to the Ministry of Health goes in this direction, as well as responding in a broader perspective to the reorganization of the hospital network. For health care that is therefore increasingly avant-garde and attentive to dynamics, with the clear aim of treating the person even before the disease “.
