Collaborative work between academics and researchers from the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, Israel, Finland, and Spain has resulted in an innovative project called ClearFarm. This project uses a technology platform powered by sensors and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform the way information on the welfare of dairy cows is monitored and displayed.
One of the key features of the ClearFarm project is the implementation of sensors and AI to monitor cow behavior at individual and herd levels. This platform provides detailed information about the health, quality of life, feeding, and other crucial aspects of each cow throughout its life. Farmers receive instant notifications in case of any anomaly that may affect their animals, benefiting both farmers and consumers.
The project targets two main groups of recipients. Consumers who purchase dairy products can now understand and know the well-being of the cow that produced the milk they consume. This information is included on packaging labeling, giving buyers a clear and conscious view of the origin of the products they select. Additionally, ClearFarm offers farmers detailed data on each of their cows throughout their lives, including information about health, behavior, diet, and other crucial aspects.
The platform addresses all five domains of animal welfare, including nutrition, housing, health, natural behavior, and mental state. ClearFarm offers a complete and detailed view of the life of each cow, aligning with voluntary food labeling regulations in Europe and reducing the risk of misleading information.
