Sailing in the Mediterranean to inform about rare diseases – Medicine

(ANSA) – NAPLES – Two sailing boats will leave from Torre Annunziata (Naples) to head to Marseille: a route with various stages, each of which will be an opportunity for information and awareness initiatives on the theme of rare diseases. This morning, in the Auditorium of the Campania Region, the project “Let’s set the sails! Wind in the stern for #thinkrare Research”, an information campaign implemented by the Directorate General for Health Protection and the Rare Diseases Coordination Center of the Region Campania, in collaboration with the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” and the delegation of the Italian Naval League of Torre Annunziata and with the support of Motori SanitĆ .
The number of known and diagnosed rare diseases fluctuates between 7,000 and 8,000, but it is a figure that grows with the advancement of science and, in particular, with the progress of genetic research. We are talking about 6-8% of the population, millions of people in Italy and even tens of millions throughout Europe.
The possibility of implementing therapeutic interventions at an early stage can significantly improve the patient’s state of health and quality of life. For this reason it is essential to promote knowledge and early diagnosis for these pathologies.
The initiative provides for the departure of two sailing boats, conducted alone, which from the port of Torre Annunziata will arrive in Marseille after about 20 stops including Rome, Livorno and Genoa (thanks to the collaboration with the Lazio, Tuscany and Liguria regions). The crossing, from 6 June to 7 July, will be accompanied by various initiatives and meetings, on the occasion of the stops in the ports, which aim to promote research on rare diseases. (HANDLE).
