Scabies can be cured using an ancient recipe. Among the contagious diseases spread throughout the world, experts are currently worried about scabies, caused by the ‘sarcoptes scabiei hominis’ mite and which is spreading extremely easily in Italy.
Taking stock of the situation, as reported by the beraking latest news news agency, is the Irccs Meyer of Florence where 2/3 cases of patients with scabies are recorded every week. In this regard, however, it seems that the institute’s experts have found a definitive cure by revisiting an ancient recipe based on sulphur.
It was a study, published in the ‘International Journal of Dermatology’, which conveyed satisfactory results, where 22 patients were examined, all tested by applying a cream on the parts affected by intensely itchy lesions with erythematous papules and burrows. The drug was born from the intuition of treating affected patients with a sulfur preparation at 17% concentration, but based on a ‘gentle vehicle’, an emollient and therefore non-irritating cream.
Therefore, this new administration protocol has been developed at Meyer in Florence: “The cream is applied in the evening and then kept applied for three days, without washing, in order to create an occlusive ‘barrier’ of sulfur and then the treatment is repeated (strictly on the entire family and cohabitants) the following week”.
The study’s specialist dermatologist, Cesare Filippeschi, stated: “This discovery is arousing interest from other national and international centers. Furthermore, it is a galenic preparation which has a reduced cost compared to other therapies on the market, and which once moreover, it reminds us how sometimes by rediscovering ‘old’ molecules it is possible to develop effective therapies: we think that from the beginning of the last century until the 1990s, the fumes of burnt sulfur flowers were used to clean up the rooms of scabies patients !”.
This breakthrough in treating scabies is a significant development in the medical field and offers hope for those suffering from this highly contagious skin condition.
