The Cruces hospital in Spain has launched a state-of-the-art nuclear medicine service with cutting-edge technology, completing a modern facility adapted to the times. Over the last five years, Osakidetza has invested 8.4 million euros into restructuring and expanding the Nuclear Medicine Service, resulting in a significant increase in diagnostic imaging capacity and improved care for more than 14,000 patients.
The service primarily serves patients in oncology, pulmonology, and hematology, and has experienced notable growth in recent years. In 2023, the hospital observed a significant increase in the number of tests carried out, with nearly 38,000 tests compared to 31,000 tests in 2022, and the number of patients treated also increased.
The new technology includes three new SPECT-CT gamma camera equipment and 2 new digital PET CT machines, which have improved imaging diagnosis, health results, and patient safety. The digital PET technology represents a notable increase in image quality, allowing for better diagnosis while reducing radiation exposure for patients and professionals.
The restructuring and expansion of the service has also created three completely remodeled spaces: Conventional Nuclear Medicine Unit, PET-CT Unit, and an office and reporting room area, with improved isolation rooms for the Metabolic Therapy area on the hospital floor.
Overall, the new nuclear medicine service at the Cruces hospital marks a significant advancement in diagnostic imaging and patient care.
