Stintfang Youth Hostel: Inexpensive overnight stay in Hamburg with a view of the Elbe | > – Guide – Travel

The youth hostel on the Stintfang is located on a hill directly above the Hamburg jetties, with a view over the harbor. It is also located on the only vineyard in the Hanseatic city.

Only a few accommodations in Hamburg can boast a similarly exclusive location ā€“ and at typical youth hostel prices. The in-house terrace offers a great panoramic view over the harbor and the Elbe. There is a subway and S-Bahn stop directly below the building. It is only a few steps to the landing stages where the harbor tours start and the Elbe ferries depart.

Reeperbahn and fish market right next door

The youth hostel is located elevated on the Stintfang behind the jetties.

It is also not far to the Reeperbahn, and the fish market, which takes place every Sunday morning, is also easy to reach on foot. No wonder that the Stintfang youth hostel is one of the most popular in Germany in terms of the number of overnight stays. Around 360 guests can stay overnight in the 88 rooms.

An overnight stay with breakfast costs from 27 euros. The prerequisite is membership in the German Youth Hostel Association (costs up to and including 26 years: 7 euros/year, from 27 years and for families: 22.50 euros/year).

The Stintfang ā€“ Hamburgā€™s only vineyard

The hill itself, the Smeltfang, is named after the smelt ā€“ a small fish that used to be caught in the harbor basin. Stintfang has been a small vineyard since 1995. The vines that were planted there were a gift from Stuttgart restaurateurs and winemakers. The grapes from the 100 vines are processed into the ā€œStintfang CuvĆ©eā€.

The up to 50 bottles produced are not for sale and will be given away by the Hamburg citizens to selected guests and auctioned off for a good cause. In 2019, the vines had to give way to a major construction site to convert the subway station, and in 2022 the vineyard was replanted. The earliest it can be harvested is 2025.
