Streptococcus A, the study by Policlinico and Humanitas: 6 deaths and 5 patients in intensive care in Milan

The Streptococcus A bacterium is on the rise in Milan, Italy, with a significant increase in cases, especially among adults. A study conducted by the Policlinico and Humanitas of Milan revealed that last winter saw an early circulation of the bacterium, leading to a strong surge in serious cases. The study, published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Microbiology, analyzed cases from January 2015 to March 2023 and found a notable increase in invasive infections, with a majority affecting adult patients. This increase in infections was observed without evidence of direct transmission chains, marking a significant change from previous patterns. The study also took into account the genetic analysis of different strains of the bacterium, aiming to identify transmission chains and manage serious infections. The findings support the integration of genomic investigations to improve surveillance and better manage the spread of the bacterium. These new insights will guide efforts to address the rising cases of Streptococcus A and reduce the risk to public health.
